How to Choose the Right Sleeping Bag Temperature Rating

Choose your sleeping bag based on the lowest nighttime temperature expected during your trip. Each down-fill option is designed for different seasons and outdoor conditions.

  • 300g — 59–68°F: Best for warm summer camping, indoor use, RV trips, cabins, and mild nights.
  • 500g —41°F~54°F: Suitable for cool spring and fall camping, chilly mountain nights, and outdoor temperatures around freezing.
  • 800g — 28°F~45°F: A warmer option for cold fall nights, early-winter camping, and temperatures slightly below freezing.
  • 1000g —18°F~32°F: Designed for winter camping, colder mountain conditions, and overnight temperatures well below freezing.
  • 1500g —0°F~18°F: The warmest option for very cold winter camping when paired with an insulated sleeping pad, suitable clothing, and proper shelter.

Tip: Cold sleepers should choose a warmer option. Wind, humidity, altitude, clothing, shelter, and sleeping pad insulation can all affect sleeping comfort.

Useful and excellent material.

temperature rating: 800g Down Filling; color: Black. It is perfect for cold climates. I was at Mount Tlaloc and it held up perfectly. Excellent material. It is not too heavy and keeps warm well.

Great value for money

temperature rating: 1500g Down Filling; color: RoyalBlue. Took the 0 degree Fahrenheit sleeping bag while climbing Kilimanjaro. It was great, allowing me to sleep comfortably at a height of 4700 meters while my friends using other sleeping bags complained of the cold. In short, a great value for money sleeping bag which I highly recommend.

Recommended!

temperature rating: 800g Down Filling; color: Black. We were around -5C. The tent was good, but even so it was very cold inside, and this sleeping bag covered me perfectly from the cold. When the strong wind stopped, I even started to feel warm. I highly recommend it.

Great quality warm bag and affordable!

temperature rating: 1000g Down Filling; color: Black. Nice! I haven't used this for camping yet, but it will surely be very good. Slept in it on my bed with the windows open on a cold night, and it's a very warm, comfortable bag with plenty of room for tossing and turning. Have had many bags over the years, and this one looks to be very good. The temperature rating seems pretty accurate. Nice, dense amount of down filler, quality stitching, solid zipper, and overall good construction. The stuff sack isn't great-kind of thin material and it could be just slightly bigger to make stuffing easier. Not a big deal as I have others. It does, however, come with a nice larger mesh bag as well, which is great to store it or let it air out and poof up a bit. After getting this bag and seeing the high quality I bought a blue version too, and can't wait to use them for some Pacific NW camping.

Very comfortable

temperature rating: 1500g Down Filling; color: Black. I used this sleeping bag at 13,800 ft of elevation in the Peruvian Andes last May. It got down into the 20s Fahrenheit at night. I was extremely comfortable and slept well in my merino wool leggings and long-sleeve shirt while I was zipped up in this bag. I did use a Sea to Summit thin liner as well. Although this bag doesn't pack down small, it was worth the space in my check-in bag going to Peru. Out of everyone in my group, I slept the best because I wasn't freezing on my Salkantay hiking trip. I really liked how easily it zipped, and the little neck pillow to keep air out.

Warm bag, thin material

temperature rating: 1000g Down Filling; color: Black. I purchased this for my scout, 5'8 and 130 lb, to take camping this weekend in less than 30 degree weather. He came back from camp and said he was really warm. When the bag arrived we pulled it out of the stuff sack to fluff it up. It puffed up nicely and he seemed to have a good bit of room. We tested the zippers and they moved without any issues. There are two separate zipper sections for the top 3/4 of the bag and the foot/lower leg area. Getting it back in the sack once puffed up was a little difficult, but we managed. It is fairly lightweight and packs down small, so he was able to fit it in his 60L pack. My only issue with the bag was how thin the outer fabric is. When my son got home he thought there was a hole. After inspecting the bag I did find a 1 inch hole on the back side. I think he may have caught the bag on a splinter. The filling was not coming out, thankfully, so I patched the hole with some nylon repair tape. Overall it is a warm cold weather bag, just be careful where you drag it.

Excellent product.

temperature rating: 800g Down Filling; color: Black. I was wondering whether to buy it because other comments said it was not that light. I know there are very light bags, but they are also much more expensive. Personally, it felt very light to me.

Warm and Comfy in Cold Weather

temperature rating: 1500g Down Filling; color: Black. Well I finally got a chance to put this bag through its paces. I spent 14 days on a fly in moose hunt in northern British Columbia near the Yukon border. We had temps dip into the -15C range overnight and I was warm and cozy through out the night. I would have to say I was impressed and was glad that I was able to get a great sleep without having to get up and maintain the fire in our single wall tipi tent every couple of hours to keep warm. If you are looking for a low cost option for cold weather camping then I wouldn't hesitate to go with this bag.
